When we got married many moons ago, we never had a wedding reception, what more one which had the bridal dais. Firstly because our nikah took place earlier than planned. You see, what happened was we were at the office submitting our papers to apply for a wali hakim (you need to apply at least a month in advance) when the fella turned to us, saw everything in order and joked, “kalo mo, buli nikah petang ni sebab ada slot kusung, mau?” To which Azmi and I immediately said “bah! Urus!” So with no makeup on and my wedding dress still at the tailor getting traditional beads sewn on it, I got hitched donning a pair of jeans and a yellow Zara top with a random shawl found in my handbag to cover my hair. Azmi professed the lafaz in one breath with mas kahwin RM80 (couldn’t you at least make it RM88?) and just like that. We were officially husband and wife. We came home, told mom the news, she congratulated us and said “we celebrate with a BBQ lah kio?”. So with smoky chicken wings, 3-10 and mom’s lethal brew, that pretty much summed up my wedding reception at home with my family strumming songs with the guitar as entertainment. Azmi told me that the pelamin etc was more of a cultural aspect and not compulsory in Islam. Being the second time around for both of us, I settled for that excuse but always secretly harboured for the official enthronement ceremony with both our parents. Now that Dad has passed away, I guess we won’t really have that physical blessing ceremony but I’m at peace knowing we’ve been granted that despite no show for public. My husband dutifully takes couple photos at random pelamins with me because he knows my inner wish - and “baik ambik gambar dengan bini aku kat sini. Free mah.... apa mau susah?” I actually don’t need to be Raja Sehari. I-King mah. Everybody cue to LOL now. ???? Ok.
